Ah, wedding makeup… a subtle art

You. Are. Beautiful.

Wedding makeup is something every bride should treat herself to. Why? Even the low-maintenance girl deserves a little glam on her wedding day, plus it makes a huge impact on how you show up in photos. Too many times, we’ve seen brides and their bridal party who forgo professional makeup and end up with shiny faces, invisible eyebrows and runny eyes — not a good look for your wedding day. We want you to look as good on the outside as you feel on the inside that day and some subtle makeup goes a long way!

You might be surprised to hear, however, that for some, subtle makeup that enhances one's natural beauty isn’t a look they’re interested in. Occasionally, our makeup artists hear:

“I would like one step down from drag queen.”

Surprised? Don’t be.

It may be hard to believe, but this is a makeup request we get on the regular. A lot of clients think they want it caked on and layered for days. Their goal is to look like someone else – a contestant on Ru-Paul’s Drag Race, an Instagram filter – we’re not entirely sure where the inspiration comes from. Sure, there is a time and a place for this type of fierce stage makeup, but it’s not your wedding day. The Top Knot philosophy is to empower our clients to feel gorgeous by playing up their natural features, not by disguising them.

Still not convinced? Here’s a few items to consider:

  • You can avoid surprises: Top Knot makeup stylists are able to provide a bride with a trial ahead of time in order to nail down the perfect look.

  • A little glam is good: there’s no need to be intimidated by false lashes and foundation – they may seem dramatic in theory, but a real professional has a way of using their talent to enhance your natural beauty in a subtle way.

  • Be yourself: a good artist will also make you feel like yourself, and steer you away from super trendy makeup, like glitter or intense lip colour.

  • Bottom line: you want to look back at your pictures and be the timeless bride, not the cringey kind!

If we could give one piece of beauty advice to the modern bride, it would be to come in with your ideas and an open mind. Ask your makeup artist what they think would look best with your skin tone, your dress and your hair. Trust the process, and above all else – save the drag makeup for the runway!

You are beautiful, and you are enough.
